Ethically Conscious Jewelry by Bario-Neal

By on October 20, 2010

When I first discovered Bario-Neal jewelry I was immediately drawn to the minimal, bare elegance of their fine bracelets, rings and necklaces. Little did I know that besides being absolutely lovely to look at, each piece is handcrafted in Philadelphia, all of the metal used is reclaimed, and their stones are either recycled or ethically sourced.

Bario-Neal was started by designers Anna Bario and Page Neal who both wanted to provide unique, handmade jewelry that is environmentally and socially conscious. This code of ethics is clear from their list of studio practices down to the fact that a portion of their proceeds go to the Association for Responsible Mining. They even share details (and a blog) about where their materials come from, down to what mines they source their gems from – The Green Stylist LOVES companies that are transparent about their manufacturing process!

Inspired by the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley and Harold Fisk’s hand-drawn maps of that area, the Alluvial Collection is my favorite and all about fresh, organic shapes. The Knottedrush Ring ($154) is so elegant and low-key with it’s simple little handmade knot, and the free-forming chains from the Sisal Blue Necklace are reminiscent of an aerial view of the Mississippi. (both pictured above)

Their amazing pieces range in price from  $44 to $2000 for their custom pieces.
