Christopher Drummond Beauty Creating Eco-friendly and Animal-Friendly Cosmetics

By on May 19, 2011

“Every product, every package, everything in our line has a back story.  For instance, with Saude Pele, I wanted a Brazilian influenced product that would make your skin look amazing.  I had never heard of Acai before, but saw it on a magazine one day, and KNEW I needed to find a way to put it into my product,” says Christopher Drummond who is now a professional makeup artist who began his career in the beauty industry as a fashion model over fifteen years ago.

Drummond created his eco-friendly all natural makeup line out of frustration and passion because  he found it difficult to find a foundation that matched his ethnic skin. Which is something a lot of women still struggle with today.

Christopher Drummond Beauty is a luxurious makeup brand that utilizes wonderful ingredients found in nature such as White Kaolin Clay, Organic Lavender Essential Oil, Organic Lime Essential Oil, Organic Clove Bud Essential Oil, Organic Vanilla Extract, Organic Geranium Essential Oil, Organic Patchouli Essential Oil.

Drummond is credited for working on celebrities such as  Jennifer Lopez, Kimora Lee Simmons, Brooke Shields, Kerry Washington, Halle Berry, Glenn Close and Jane Fonda, to name a few.

Recently Drummond was kind enough to answer a few questions for The Green Stylist.

What inspired you to become a makeup artist?

I found that a lot of makeup artists couldn’t match my color properly (when I was modeling).  It frustrated me.  Then,  knowing that modeling wouldn’t last forever, I went to a cosmetic counter one day, and was hired on the spot!

What inspired you to create your current line?

I couldn’t find a makeup line that I tuly loved and believed in.  So, being proactive, I thought “I’ll create the perfect makeup line!!”

What is your favorite ingredient to use in your products and why?

Essential oils.  When used in the right amount, they are so amazing for the skin.

What inspired you to create vegetarian/vegan make up line?

I am not a vegan.  However, I am a strong believer in using beauty products that are as cruelty free as humanly possible.  I set out to prove that you can have a beautiful, luxurious makeup line that is 100% cruelty free (including having vegan brushes), and we did that.  Our products are all made in the U.S, and are 100% cruelty free.  We are very proud of that.

What have been the challenges of creating such a line?

There are challenges every step of the way.  It is incredibly difficult.  Especially when creating a healthy, all natural, cruelty free line.  You have no idea how few companies there are to work with that maintain the standards we do with our line!  Every day is a challenge.  It’s the hardest thing I have ever done.

What do you feel is the biggest mistake people make when applying makeup?

Very simple.  They are too heavy handed.  They apply too much product.

What makeup items should every woman carry in her purse?

I’m a proponent that if you have a great makeup, you don’t need to retouch it all day, so a good lipstick, lipgloss, and pressed powder is all you really should need in your purse.  Everything else should be left at home…..

What is your favorite product in your line and why?

I think the Finale Finishing Powder is the most misunderstood and the best product in our line.  It gives your skin a beautiful look without looking cakey, made up, or fake.  It gives a beautiful airbrushed appearance……

What makes your product different from other natural make brands on the market?

Quality and integrity.  We have a team of people who comb through every product, every ingredient, every color, to make sure it is suitable for the CDB name.  We painstakingly pay attention to every detail of our products.  We truly care about the products we put our name on.

Do you feel the term “natural” is being misrepresented in the beauty product industry?

Absolutely.  There is little to no regulation in this industry, so you can pretty much say and do whatever you want.  Consumers trust companies, and they shouldn’t.  I always tell women, do your homework, and find out what you are putting on your skin.

Is there anything about the current cosmetic industry that turns your stomach?

The lack of cosmetic regulation is really horrible.  You  can literally put anything on the market and say whatever you want about it.

How has your sense of style evolved over the years?

It hasn’t!  I am a very basic and no frills person when it comes to fashion.  Comfort always wins.

What would you say your greatest accomplishment has been as a makeup artist?

Creating a full makeup line, and getting it in locations such as the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons, and the Lodge at Woodloch, and Cascade Spa in NH
