How many hours of sleep do you get every night? Now multiply that by 365 days in the year. If you’re anything like me you may have answered “as many as I can get!” and ended up with a yearly average of about 2,900 hours in bed. Even if you are a few hours below the average of 7 or 8 hours, say you get 5 a day (I can’t imagine that), you’re still close to 1,825 hours of sleep per year.
Now imagine how many times in a day we make decisions in the interest of protecting our health. Whether it’s eating a balanced breakfast or washing our hands when we come home at night, we are constantly deciding to (or in some cases deciding not to) do what is best for our bodies. So why is it that when it comes to sleeping we throw all caution to the wind?
If you are sleeping 7 hours a night, that’s 2,500 hours every year that your skin is coming into contact with whatever chemicals and dyes were used to create those sheets and pillowcases. It’s time you made your place of rest a true oasis and reconsider what kinds of toxins you’ll allow into your bedroom.
Indika Organics offers bedding, towels, and other textiles made of natural and organic materials and “created especially for those people who desire to live in a chemically free environment and further promote healthy living.” In fact, Indika began creating textiles to provide healthy alternatives for people suffering from chemical sensitivities.
Using natural and organic processes to grow, dye, and weave the fibers in their textiles not only reduces the environmental impact of Indika Organics but also ensures the longevity of their product. According to the Indika brand, untreated cotton fiber can often last up to 3 years longer than conventional fibers, which have been stripped of natural oils during the chemical treatment process. Additionally, Indika fabrics are manufactured just outside of Kalispell, Montana, meaning you can rest assured your sheets have a far smaller carbon-footprint than the average bedding.
I especially love these materials because the hues are subtle and calming—“Indika’s collections, inspired by earth’s natural resources, are simple and timeless in both color and texture.” Best of all, because each batch of fabrics is dyed naturally, no two batches are exactly alike and you are guaranteed a unique set. A few of us here at The Green Stylist have to say, the Otago collection is particularly dreamy!
