I’m really excited to share L.A. native designer Carrie Parry with you. After learning about her, I think you’ll be excited too!
With an impressive stance on social and sustainable responsibility, Parry has clearly taken her commitment to ethical design very seriously. From the sustainably grown and harvested raw materials that go into the textiles she uses, to the local (New York City) production of her garments, Parry’s business model strives for sustainability at every stage of production. Not only does she look for sustainability in her fabrics, she also aims to support artisans and pay fair wages for their labor. Woven wool in Parry’s lines comes from a group called Panchachuli, which supports women weavers in the Indian Himalayas. I encourage you to look at Parry’s social responsibility page to learn more about the fabulous things she is doing.
More exciting news is that Bloomingdale’s recognized Carrie Parry designs, hosting the eco-designer at its SoHo location in April. It is wonderful that designers like Parry are receiving support from well known department stores, showing that environmentally conscious clothing can also be beautiful. With the launch of her fall 2011 line you will find simple but sophisticated designs that were created to be timeless and versatile—another way that Parry infuses her designs with sustainability in mind.

“It’s a concept, an aesthetic, a philosophy, and a lifestyle, designing clothes of the finest quality rendered from responsible sources that transition effortlessly from day to night, season to season … Our mission [is to] supply customers with high quality, innovative and fashion-forward products, that build awareness to empower consumers and producers to participate in socially and environmentally responsible solutions and lifestyles.” (Carrie Parry website)
I am in love with her Colorblock Sleeveless Dress because it combines a current trend (color blocking) with a wearable design that I know I could wear season after season. If you want to try wearing a pop color but braving multiple colors isn’t for you, you might like her bright red skirt. I also really like the gingham that is reflected throughout many pieces of her fall collection. The best part about Carry Parry designs? For every garment purchased, a tree is planted in India through the non-profit Trees for the Future.
