Interview with Sprout a Revolution founder Adina Grigore

By on July 26, 2011

“I changed my company’s name and packaging because I wanted my company to mature and evolve in the same ways I am. I want it to become more than just skincare, I want it to make people think about how they can stand up for themselves and their health. How they can demand better,” says Sprout Wellness owner and founder Adina Grigore.

Sprout Wellness which is now called Sprout a Revolution is an all natural organic skincare company that may have evolved with its name and packaging but still adheres to making their products simple with very few ingredients that are luxurious for the skin.

Recently Adina Grigore was kind enough to answer a few questions about her company.

What inspired you to create your company?

When I graduated from college, I decided to start studying wellness. I went to school for holistic nutrition and became a personal trainer. Initially, I just felt like people didn’t have enough access to information about getting healthy; in general it’s treated like a luxury instead of a right. So I taught seminars and workshops, and many of them were about easily making your own skincare. But people just wanted to buy product from me directly. I gave them what they wanted!

What inspired your company’s name?

It was fairly random, my boyfriend made a print of a bean sprout that I am in love with, and we were talking about the idea of helping people grow into their own health… that we wanted to help people sprout wellness. It became the logo and the name.

Did you face any challenges?

I still do. There are so many challenges it’s impossible to name them all. You have to be extremely motivated and really deal with a lot of ups and downs to run a business.

What do you think is the biggest mistake most people make when purchasing a beauty product?

Reading the marketing copy but not the ingredients. Thinking that “derived from” means something is natural. Sorry I guess that’s two!!

What inspires you?

Other ethical companies, and other people trying to change the world, even if it’s just by being better people.

Which of your products do you use in your daily routine?

I use the cream and lip balm constantly, the toner at night, and the cleanser or exfoliant if I’m feeling really gross.

What are your best sellers?

The cream and the cleanser are the two stars.

Why is important to by organic beauty product?

Because if you don’t care about yourself, you should care about the planet, and if you don’t care that much about the planet, then you probably at least care about other people in your life. Non-organic ingredients hurt everyone.

So many organic beauty products on the market contain many  ingredients while yours contain very few what is the reasoning behind that?

I felt like most available products either have a lot of ingredients because of low-quality additives, or exotic ingredients and herbs that make them luxurious and expensive. I wanted to use the fewest possible ingredients to create a really effective product. Also, if you’re sensitive like me, the more ingredients there are in something, the more likely you are to have a reaction, even if they’re all natural.

In the last year the term “going green” has been all over the place, even though most of us have been living a green life style for many years.  Is there anything about the current “green” movement that frustrates you?

Oh of course! People in my life regularly have to listen to me rant about how awful I think greenwashing is.  Also it bothers me that people still depend on companies to provide them with “green” products, when there are so many things we could all be doing ourselves.

Do you feel the term “natural” is being misrepresented in the beauty product industry?

Definitely. Absolutely. Constantly, and everywhere.

What does sustainability mean to you?

For us it’s about using ingredients and creating products that cause minimal harm to the environment, and come about in a way that can be reproduced long term.

Name one thing you wish people would recycle more?

Their furniture and clothing. You don’t ever need to throw either of those things out, there will ALWAYS be someone who needs them.

What’s in store for the future?

We’re working on four new products, plus we’re still tweaking our new packaging to make it perfect. We’ll also be expanding our wellness services soon!
