I recently had the pleasure to talk with Lisa Devo who is one of the four owners of The Soap and Paper Factory in New York. This company makes their entire product line by hand and specializes in producing lovely smelling soaps, lotions, solid fragrances and soy candles.
Since I am a strict vegan I had my mother try their lotion which contains beeswax. My mother tends to do a fair amount of gardening, resulting in her hands being a little on the dry rough side. For a week she applied the lotion to her hands morning and night. My mother loves the smell of the lotion and its smooth texture. The lotions contains Shea Butter which has a natural SPF, her skin is also protected from the elements. She found that the lotion kept her hands moisturized throughout the day and by the end of the week her dry rough hands were soft and healed.
What I found to be most admirable about The Soap and Paper Factory is their dedication to source and produce everything in the U.S.
However, this has become a dying practice for many businesses that want to support their local economy. The issue with sourcing in the U.S. is that materials are incredibly hard to find and due to high prices and production costs it becomes unfeasible.
With so many companies succumbing to the pressure of sourcing out of the country you can’t help but admire business like The Soap and Paper Factory.
Food for thought: Do you know how many items you own that are “Made in the U.S.”?
