evolution apparel, aptly named for the revolutionary nature of its mission to see fashion evolve, is much more than a clothing brand offering a sustainable alternative. Kristin Glenn and Shannon Whitehead are the duo behind the label, and an efficiently dynamic one at that. During their travels around the world the ladies created their signature design the Versalette after realizing their need for a versatile garment that wouldn’t take up much packing space. The result was a one-size-fits-most garment that can be worn in over 20 different ways and produced with materials and methods that puts most big name brands to shame.

The Versalettes are assembled in North Carolina with 100% recycled fabric that is made entirely in the USA, as are the hand-carved buttons and GOTS certified drawstrings. Investigation into the production of their garment led Kristin and Shannon to discoveries that sparked much more than a clever design solution, turning the two travelers into dedicated advocates of sustainable fashion.

This June {r}evolution apparel and their two interns embarked on a Sustainable Fashion Tour of the west coast to spark discussions on issues inherent in the apparel industry and to explore ideas behind sustainable fashion. Starting up in Vancouver B.C. the crew has been cruising down the coast inviting locals to pop-up shops, interviewing industry experts, and spreading the word on sustainable fashion by asking the fundamental question: Where do our clothes come from? Their tour is creating deserved and necessary awareness around the amazing projects and individuals that are changing the way society understands clothing by taking a look at the hotbeds for sustainable fashion ventures in Washington, Oregon and California. With filmed documentation, fantastic blog posts and whole new set of experiences from the tour, {r}evolution apparel’s next steps are definitely ones to anticipate.
The crew has now reached San Francisco, their final destination on the tour. EcoSalon has acted as the media sponsor for their adventure, featuring weekly posts on the crew’s progress and exciting discoveries. Catch up on their thoughts and insights through their blog or EcoSalon and have a look at the places they’ve visited through their online gallery. {r}evolution apparel is hosting a fashion show at the Candystore Collective in San Francisco on August 2nd, so make sure to pop in if you’re in the neighborhood.
In order to make the Versalette more accessible to followers, the {r} ladies decided to take on the Versalette Challenge by wearing their design for the 60-day duration of their tour. Each day’s outfit is documented in their online gallery, demonstrating the numerous options the garment offers and showing how it can completely change attitudes towards ways of wearing clothes. The Versalette is made from a jersey fabric that comes in four different colors in a simple design, making your imagination the only limit. {r}evolution apparel has even toyed with the idea of producing the Versalette in different fabrics for different occasions, climate types and customer bases. Check out their video on how to wear this clever garment and entice yourself to slip it into a suitcase for your next trip!
